(Designer and builder, Ron Jones, poses with the model at one of our Coulon Park events.) The model: The model is brand new for Danny in 2014, replacing an older model of the same boat. It is as beautiful a model as you'll find out there and is performing better all the time. The Winged Wonder is a great addition to the club and the guys did a great job building this latest version. The real boat: The boat was an instant front runner when it was brought into competition in 1973. Ron Jones designed and built the boat that earned the nick name “Winged Wonder,” being the first boat to sport a successful rear wing. Jim Lucero was the team's crew chief. Mickey Remund piloted the boat in 1973 and went on to win the national high points. He then left to race with the Budweiser team. New driver “Smiling” George Henley drove the boat in the 1974 and 75 seasons. George would clean house both those years and win two straight national championships. After the 1975 season, owner Dave Heerensperger decided to step out of racing and sold the hull to Bill Muncey, who raced it in 1976 under the colors of Atlas Van Lines. In 1977, the boat came back for a brief period of time as the Pay ‘N’ Pak once again. In 1978, the boat was sold again to the Madison Racing team where it stayed the rest of its life when it was finally retired in 1988.
