The model:  Mitch teamed up with former CT champion, Nigel Steere, to complete a plug for this boat.  Nigel designed and did the initial cutting of the plugs.  Mitch did the smoothing, filling and finishing of the plugs. Nigel did a very light weight, thin layup in carbon fiber and fiberglass as one of three boats that have been produced from the plug.  The boat got a foam inner structure, reinforcements, paint and gear just in time for the opener in 2007.  Right out of the box it performed well and won championships in 2007 and 2008.  The boat will run its third season in 2009 with its third different motor and new setup.

The real boat:  This version of the "Grand Old Lady" broke the world straightaway record in 1952, bettering the record she had set back in 1950.   Owner Stan Sayres drove during the record run with Mike Welch sitting in the second seat as a riding mechanic.  The second seat was empty when she won the 52 Gold Cup on Lake Washington with Stanley Dollar driving.
