Scratch Building Options & Tips

 

If you're a scratch buillder, here are a few build options to consider. Some building methods can be combined and don't be afraid to experiment. Also check the For Sale page for info on buying laser cut wood kits. You might also have the option of purchasing or building a composite hull of carbon fiber or fiberglass.

Jim Clarke's '67 Bardahl under construction. Weight is an important concern with these boats. All plywood is 1/32". Building one of our class boats may resemble creating a model airplane more than a glow fuel boat. Note the Styrofoam in the background. Floatation and support will be added before the sponsons are sheeted and the hull is decked.


Mitch Dillard's foam construction technique. He basically builds a hull out of foam and then skins it with plywood.


John Williams' '73 Pay 'n Pak under construction. Note the fibers epoxied into various areas for extra strength.
